FORUM TIPS - NCBA Section/ Division Forums User Tips

The NCBA Section/ Division Forums User Tips are designed to help you better use these new online forums. They also contain a link to forum tips and etiquette.

NCBA Section/ Division Forums User Tips
 
1. Do I need to be a member to read the forums?
NO
, you do not need to be a member of the section or division or even the NCBA to read existing posts.  NOTE: This can be changed for each section and division, as desired.

2. Do I need to be a member to make comments on the forum?
YES
, ONLY section and division members can start a new thread OR add comments to an existing thread after they have logged in.  You can log in by using one of 3 methods:
a.  Your username and password
b.  Your email address and password
c.  Your custom user name and password

3. How do I make a post on the forum?
After logging in, you can either start a new thread by selecting "New Thread" OR reply to an existing thread by selecting "Reply to this Thread".

4. How do I add my personal forum author name?
After logging in, select the "Edit Profile" link in the left-side navigation panel. Please review your information and to make changes, select the "myNCBar" link, then expand the "myProfile/Interest" link and click on "myAccount".  Enter your information and select the "update" button. Your updated information should display when you make a post.

5. What type of posts can I make?
When posting a new thread, there are four options available to you:
a.  Normal - By not selecting any boxes, your post will be submitted as a normal online post that others can reply to.
b.  Announcement  - An announcement is the same as a normal post except a red exclamation point is displayed to the left of your post indicating that a reply is NOT required.
c.  Pinned Post - By selecting the "Pinned Post" box, your post will always remain at the top of the forum, even when new threads are started.
d.  No reply - By selecting the "Do not allow replies to this post" box, you are denying other members the ability to reply to your post.

6. Can I edit or delete my post?
YES
, after logging in you can delete or edit your post by selecting the corresponding link.
NOTE: When you delete an initial post, you are deleting the entire thread, including all of the replies that followed your initial post.

7. How do I reply to somebody else's post on the forum?
After logging in, you can select somebody's post and then select "Reply to this Thread".

8. Does my browser need to accept cookies to be able to use the forum?
YES, in order to successfully navigate the NCBA's Web site, you must have either "Session Cookies" or "1st Party cookies" enabled AND "JavaScript" enabled within your Web browser.

9. Can I to reply to the person who made a post without posting my reply on the forum for everyone to see?
YES, you can do this by sending the thread's author a direct email by (a) selecting the author's name inside the post, (b) displaying their email address, and (c) selecting their email address to create a new message.  NOTE: Be sure to reference their post in the subject line.

10. Can I have the forum automatically notify me when a new thread is posted?
YES, select the "Notify me of new threads" box and an email will be automatically sent to the email address that you provided to the NCBA every time a new thread is started.  The email will contain the subject of the thread and a link that you can select to automatically display the new thread.  NOTE: This option can be selected or deselected at any time.

11. Can I have the forum automatically notify me when a new comment to an existing thread is posted?
YES
, select the "Notify me of new comments" box and an email will be automatically sent to the email address that you provided to the NCBA every time a new thread is started.  The email will contain the subject of the thread and a link that you can select to automatically display the new comment.  NOTE: This option can be selected or deselected at any time.

12. I am new to the forum, is there any information on tips and etiquette for using the forum?
YES, click HERE.

13. Are the section and division forums moderated?
NO
, therefore the opinions and products discussed on these forums do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the North Carolina Bar Association nor do they represent an endorsement of any product, provider, etc.

14. How can I search the forums?
The NCBA's search application does NOT currently include searching the section and division forums. We anticipate adding this functionality in the next 6-12 months.  In the meantime you can search pages/forums by using your Web browsers "Find" tool.

15. Can thread comments be displayed / organized differently?
YES
, there are 4 user-friendly ways that thread comments can be displayed / organized including Nested, Embedded, Flat, and Threaded.  You can easily change the way your threads are displayed by selecting the appropriate display option in the dropdown box.

16. Nothing happens when I "submit" a post.  What's wrong?
Most likely you are missing some of the required information in the submit form.  Scroll back through the form and look for the word "required" in red.  Fill out the corresponding field and then try to "submit" your post again.
